(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicagoans say the explosive violence that has occurred in high-profile settings has ruined the city’s quality of life and made them feel unsafe.

Most recently, a mass shooting erupted late Thursday that left two people dead and seven wounded at Chicago and State near Holy Name Cathedral. Police said they arrested two people and were seeking a third person.

Resident Scott White thought taking advantage of the nightlife on the Near North Side was a perk of living there, but that that’s been changing lately.

“It’s really sad. Love this town. Love Chicago, but when you don’t want to go out at night anymore after dark, and you’re staying in all the time, I don’t want that. Why live here if it’s going to be like that?” he told WBBM Newsradio’s Bernie Tafoya.

Near North Sider Christine Rezagholi said she doesn’t feel safe in her own neighborhood anymore.

“I don’t even go out with a purse, a handbag, [I] usually wear workout clothes because I feel like I’m a target,” she said.

Rezagholi added that young people aren’t afraid of police even when officers are near.

“I pay the most expensive property taxes. For what? For people that don’t even live in the neighborhood to come and wreck it?”
