(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Non-tenure faculty including adjunct and lecturers are looking to join other school and museum staff and the Art Institute of Chicago Workers United.
The move comes just months after other staff won their own union elections with nearly 200 signatures.
A public letter said the current working conditions are intolerable and at the faculty believes they can secure better pay and benefits.
“SAIC has pledged to dismantle inequity, yet the school’s imbalances in compensation, benefits, security, and support further entrench it," states the letter.
“We believe there can be no equity without power-sharing; acting in solidarity, we can disrupt entrenched inequities at SAIC and pursue more fair-minded, equitable, and inclusive circumstances for all."
Non-tenure track faculty make up more than three-quarters of the total faculty of the school.
