
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An off-duty Chicago firefighter has died after he was pulled from Lake Michigan Sunday morning.
The firefighter had just finished his shift and was at 31st Street Beach with his family, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Crews responded to a distress call for someone in the water at around 7:30 a.m. and pulled the 42-year-old out.
The department said he was initially in critical condition and then died at the hospital.
Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said the loss of any CFD member is a loss for the first responder community and the city as a whole.
CFD is conducting a full investigation.
