CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago man has been arrested and charged in federal court with carjacking after he allegedly stole a vehicle from a someone in Orland Park, and then fired a shot at a police officer who was pursuing him.

On Friday, Feb. 12 around 5:20 p.m., David Johnson, 23, allegedly approached a man, who was sitting in a parked car outside his home in the 15500 block of Hollycock Court, according to federal criminal complaint filed in Chicago.

Johnson then allegedly pointed a gun at the victim’s victim’s head, and demanded the keys, saying “Don’t you f—— move,” and, “Give me the key,” the complaint stated.

Johnson ordered the victim to get out of the car, and the man complied. Then Johnson allegedly drove off in the victim's Mercedes Benz.

Minutes later, police found the stolen car speeding near Central Avenue and 151st Street, the complaint stated. Johnson was chased by police north on Interstate 57 into Chicago. Johnson exited at 119th Street, traveling northbound on Hamlet Avenue. He struck multiple vehicles during the chase, according to the complaint.

The stolen car came to a stop when it crashed into the rear of a vehicle near the intersection of 112th and Hamlet in Chicago, at approximately 5:35 p.m. Johnson exited the car and ran eastbound on 112th Street.

The first officer to exit his vehicle and run after Johnson allegedly saw Johnson point a gun in his direction and fire once, the complaint stated. The officer, who worked for the Oak Forest Police Department, wasn’t struck.

Johnson led officers on a foot chase in the area of 111th and Loomis. One officer then saw Johnson enter the back seat of a black Acura sedan. Chicago police then conducted a traffic stop on the Acura in the area of 109th Place and Loomis, at approximately 6 p.m.

Chicago police found Johnson in a vehicle with two others. He was arrested and transported to the Orland Park Police Station, the complaint stated. Before he was detained, Johnson allegedly vomited on the ground.

The gun Johnson fired at the officer wasn’t recovered, but officers found another pistol of Johnson’s with an extended clip in the car he stole, the complaint stated. Another pistol in the car allegedly belonged to the victim.

Johnson was later identified as the carjacker by officers and the victim, the complaint stated. During questioning, Johnson allegedly said he had never been to Orland Park. A search of Johnson’s phone allegedly showed that he searched for a location near the occurrence of the carjacking.

At the time of the carjacking, Johnson was on federal supervised release following a sentence to 14 months in prison for a weapons charge, the complaint stated. He was also convicted of another gun charge in 2017.

Johnson faces a federal carjacking charge, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 26, 2021, at 11:30 a.m.
