Chants of “We will not be silent,” rang out in Lakeview Sunday afternoon during the Chicago Reclaim Pride March.
Bonnie Varner, of Evanston, was among more than 100 people who turned out to march in support of trans rights and protections.
“It’s very important that we all accept queer lives, and black lives, and value each other,” Varner said. “I brought my daughter with me today.”
The march, organized by Pride Without Prejudice and Drag March for Change, began at the Belmont CTA station in Lakeview and ended at the new AIDS memorial garden.
Josh Blair, of Chicago, said the Pride movement has been compromised by corporate America.
“Pride parades have turned into a lot of big businesses putting rainbows over floats [and] showing support of LGBT communities," Blair said, "Yet they have HR policies that don’t fully support LGBT people."
Organizers wrote in a press release that, in 2020, this march resulted in change within the Chicago community, including the creation of the Chicago Black Drag Council.
