(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some Chicago aldermen are calling for new tactics, and maybe more police officers, to combat a wave of violent crime in the downtown area.

Second Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins on Thursday said it’s a dangerous trend. His office, he said, has identified 20 different crime sprees on the North Side apparently by the same group of people in a short period of time.

Hopkins said there have been arrests and some people are facing charges — after the fact.

“What we haven’t been able to do is to stop an armed robbery spree from happening on the North Side, while it’s in progress,” he said.

He said that ultimately means hiring more police to keep up with those officers who retire or quit. He said existing officers are “overwhelmed."

Fellow Downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly has written the mayor expressing frustration at the lack of overnight resources in the area.
