CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Portage Park man charged with the murder of a young girl is expected to appear in bond court today while neighbors and relatives gathered last night to mourn her.
Family and friends released purple balloons in memory of Serabi Medina, the little girl’s favorite color. Police said the 9-year-old was shot and killed Saturday night by Michael Goodman, who lives across the street, after she went to get ice cream with her father.
Relative Angie Gonzalez Rodriguez shared her frustration with CBS-2.
“How dare you think that you can just take anyone’s life, and a child? What did that child do to you or to anybody?” Rodriguez asked.
She said Serabi’s dad took Goodman’s gun away after the shooting.
“He saved other people because God only knows what that monster intended to do that night, how many lives he was going to take, and if it wasn’t for Serabi’s father, it could be a lot more,” Rodriguez said.
Police said Goodman was shot during that struggle and he’s been hospitalized. Relatives said Serabi moved to the area after her mother was killed by gun violence about four years ago.
Police had originally reported her age as 8, but the medical examiner said she was 9.
