Reimagined Blues Fest debuts in Bronzeville after being held downtown for years

Blues Festival debuts in Bronzeville after being held downtown for years

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The famous Chicago Blues Festival was held downtown since its inception in 1984 but on Sunday the festival took place in Bronzeville.

If Chicago was home of the blues, then Bronzeville is the neighborhood that it grew up in.

Many of Chicago's most celebrated blues musicians lived and worked in Bronzeville including Muddy Waters, Otis Rush and Sonny Boy Williamson.

Carl Mayberry is from Atlanta but he visits Bronzeville for the blues.

"Well, it comes from a struggle. You really had to have had the blues to know the blues. The lyrics and music and all that combination together, it just thrills me. I'm an avid blues fan," Mayberry told WBBM Newsradio.

The Blues Festival was reimagined by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs after a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Bronzeville is home to the city's largest free festival.
