Community generates reward in the case of local chef who was beat and carjacked in Chinatown

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The family of a local chef is once again asking for the public’s help – this time to find whoever beat him into a coma.

Public pleas from Jin Lew’s family initially were to find the missing 61-year-old. Now, they’re asking for information to track down whoever carjacked and violently attacked the long-time chef, essentially leaving him for dead at 25th and Princeton in Chinatown.

No one is in custody for April 6’s incident so those close to him are hoping a $5,000 reward will generate leads for police.

Family spokesman Dr. Kim Tee expressed frustration with violence in Chinatown during a vigil held Sunday.

“Carjacking, armed robbery, murder, it’s uncalled for,” Tee said.

A GoFundMe campaign for the head chef at Chi Tung in Evergreen Park has raised more than $89,000. With his sons writing, the possible permanent brain damaged that their father suffered means his days of working in the kitchen are likely over.
