CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A sometimes controversial yet also highly esteemed Chicago Public School Principal received a pep rally send off on Thursday, ahead of her retirement at the end of this school year.

Dr. Joyce Kenner can also now add “celebrated” among the words used to describe her 32 years at Whitney Young Magnet High School on the city’s near west side, 27 of which she has served as principal.

“You’ve always been receptive to our ideas and willing to cooperate with students. The last few years have been difficult for us and you’ve always pushed for our mental and physical health,” said Corinoa Wong, on behalf of the Whitney Young Student Council.

“We are not just a school that emphasizes academics but also one that supports extracurriculars. Without the support you give to us students, we wouldn’t have our basketball champions, our acadec winners, or our amazing band, student Rachel Yoon said at the pep rally.

The school band spawned world renowned jazz vibraphonist Thadius Tukes, who played recently with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Tukes can now add to his lengthy credits, performing at Principal Kenner’s send off at the school where he first picked up the instrument.
