DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Advocate Aurora Health fired 440 staffers who were noncompliant with the hospital system’s COVID-19 vaccination policy.
Half of those terminated were in Illinois with the other half in Wisconsin.
“With about 99% of our team members compliant or in the process of becoming compliant with our vaccine policy, we are protecting the health and safety of our patients, communities and each other,” Advocate Aurora Health said in a statement.
According to the company, 99 percent of its 75,000 team members are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
About half of the 440 employees, which makes up less than 1 percent of AAH’s workforce, were per diem, meaning they filled in scheduling gaps on an “as-needed basis”.
The company gave employees a vaccination deadline of Oct. 15.
Those who failed to comply were given a three-day suspension and one last chance to get the vaccine before they were terminated.
Advocate Aurora Health is based in Downers Grove and Milwaukee and operates 26 hospitals and 500 sites of care in Illinois and Wisconsin.
