As Tiger Woods recovers from serious injuries he suffered in a Southern California vehicle crash, a prominent member of the Chicago-area golf community reflects on the many victories Woods had in local tournaments.

Woods won the BMW Championship twice, as well as the tournament's predecessor, the Western Open, three times — all at Cog Hill in Lemont.

Those events were run by the Western Golf Association, where Vince Pellegrino is the senior vice president of tournaments.

When Woods played in those tournaments, the number of fans in the galleries rose by 20% to 25%, he said.

Woods didn't just raise the prestige of the tournaments. His presence helped raise much more money for the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides college scholarships to golf caddies.

Well wishes for Woods came from all quarters Tuesday, including a tweet from former President Barack Obama, who referred to the golfer at the Greatest of All Time.
