CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Anyone who's ridden on the Chicago Transit Authority has probably felt the frustration of having their bus or train delayed — while having no idea where the vehicles are.

Moovit, an urban public transportation app, is launching a live location feature to help with that.

"It gives users an additional layer of context to that live arrivals data,” said Moovit spokesperson Yovav Meydad. “We not only show the countdown in minutes, but we are mapping to the user where the route is located on the map."

He said with the new feature, users will literally be able to see on a map where vehicles are through GPS tracking.

"So in Chicago, users will be able to see it for all these roads, three modes of transit, no matter which line they're waiting for, whether it's a subway, the bus or the rail, will be able to see their location on the map," Meydad said.

Meydad hopes the update will help users trust their public transportation more and added that part of Moovit’s mission is “to help transit agencies make cities better places to live.”

“Cities will be less congested, less polluted, safer to travel, and by increasing the level of confidence of commuters in public transportation — through live location, for example — we believe more people can make that shift,” Meydad said.

The live location vehicle feature is in the process of launching, he said, and will be available for iPhone and Android users on the free Moovit app.
