CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The guidelines have changed for applying for COVID-19 vaccinations at the United Center, because fewer than expected Chicagoans have signed up.

Since registration for the United Center mass vaccination site began Thursday, Governor Pritzker said fewer than 40 percent of the more than 40,000 seniors who booked appointments were from the city of Chicago.

Now, citing guidance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to make vaccine distribution more equitable and reach communities most vulnerable to the coronavirus, officials announced that appointments on Zocdoc will now be restricted to Chicagoans.

For now, only Chicagoans who fall under the 1A, 1B, and 1B+ groups will be able to make appointments at the United Center mass vaccination site. Appointments can be made by visiting www.zocdoc.com/vaccine or calling 312-746-4835.

Appointments will open to suburban Cook County residents in the coming days.

Initially, appointments were available to all Illinois residents and the appointments already scheduled will be honored.

The United Center mass vaccination site will have a soft opening Tuesday, March 9, and will be fully operational beginning Wednesday, March 10.
