(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Survivors of domestic or sexually related violence often face significant barriers to accessing shelter, food, clothing, secure housing, utilities, and income with separation from their abusers many times leaving them to rebuild a life on their own.

To help survivors in their rebuilding process, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) has announced $2.8 million in transitional housing funds supported with fines paid by those convicted of violating federal laws.

The grants will range from a $100,000 – $400,000 and  will be made available to public agencies and nonprofits that offer support programs for adult survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, anti-LGBTQ violence, forced labor and other crimes.

In a statement, ICJIA Executive Director Delrice Adams called secure housing “critical” for survivors as they “begin their paths to healing in both urban and rural areas.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe and protected,” Adams said. “But, unfortunately, for many survivors of victimization, basic housing resources are threatened, reduced, or eliminated.”

The application deadline is Jan. 18, 2023.
