CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police said vandals broke into the Nordstrom store on North Michigan Avenue overnight, causing North Michigan Avenue to be shut down for a while as police investigated.

Police said that shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday at least three men used a rock or brick to break a glass door window of Nordstrom on the Grand Avenue side.

One suspect was arrested a short distance away. The others made off with purses and other merchandise.

WBBM Newsradio’s Brandon Ison spoke with a man who identified as TJ, who happened to be working inside the store at the time.

"We had no idea. We was minding our own business, working as we usually do and we just heard a boom. And so, we just got up out of there. No questions asked. That’s it. That’s all," he said.

Meanwhile, police said there was a similar break-in at the Citi-Trends store on 47th and Halsted in the Canaryville neighborhood less than an hour after Nordstrom burglary.

Police said one suspect was taken into custody there, too.

The incidents come amid heightened tension over the expected release this week of body cam video following the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo.

Chicago Police were also following reports of protests near Minneapolis following another deadly police shooing there on Sunday afternoon.
