Dangerous weekend drag racing continues to plague Chicago streets

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Several Chicago neighborhoods this past weekend were once again sites of out of control drag racing with unruly crowds.

Cell phone video footage from early Sunday morning showed a group of people bludgeoning six CPD squad cars with anything they could get their hands on. Officers were responding near Chinatown, at Canal and Cermak, to calls of drag racing. There was no report of officer injuries, and the squads could be seen on video retreating from the scene.

According to police, the same crowd was seen earlier that same night in a “street takeover,” drag racing and drifting in the West Loop, at Madison and Morgan.

Chicago police had their hands full all weekend long with drag racing incidents. Early Saturday, video circulated on social media of a wild race near 25th and King Drive, on the Near South Side. In response, police tweeted a reminder to residents, warning of a new city ordinance, that states, if caught drag racing and drifting, your car will be impounded, and would be fined as much as $10,000.
