CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago police are hoping surveillance camera footage from a West Loop Shell gas station can lead to finding the suspect who carjacked a woman, dragged her for several blocks, and then drove away with her dog inside.

Investigators said on Saturday, at around 5:15 p.m., a 54-year-old woman walked up to her white Jeep Cherokee, parked on Van Buren near Aberdeen, and discovered a man in the driver’s seat. It is unclear how the man got into the car. The woman then tried to confront the man, police said, but he was able to take control of the car and began driving.

Police said, with her hanging on in the back seat of the jeep, the man dragged the woman until he reached Ashland and Jackson. It was there that the woman fell out of the car. However, the suspect drove off with the victim’s Shih Tzu still inside the car, police said.

The woman was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said, having suffered cuts to her neck, chest, and back.

Video cameras at a nearby Shell gas station captured the carjacking. Police described the suspect as a Black male in his late 20s, 5’7’’ tall, weighing about 165 pounds, and having short hair. Detectives also said the man was wearing a blue shirt, with a yellow construction vest at the time of the incident.
