(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in Des Plaines accused a 34-year-old man with allegedly trying to murder his girlfriend, who was able to escape and call authorities from her car.

Des Plaines Police said it happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning, when Kristofer Thompson came home after a night of drinking and accused his 30-year-old girlfriend of being in the CIA.

Thompson then allegedly threatened to kill her and, over the next several hours, repeatedly punched her in the head and hit her with a gun.

Authorities said Thompson, multiple times, gave his girlfriend a countdown to ending her life before stopping at the last moment.

Police said she managed to escape after Thompson fell asleep. She then got into her car, drove away and called police.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, police said Thompson was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Thompson’s bond was set at $750,000, and his next court date will be on March 14 at the Skokie Court House.
