(WBBM NEWSARDIO) — Members of the Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit offered new details Monday about a boating accident at the “Playpen” area of Lake Michigan that left two women with critical injuries over the weekend.
Officer Ark Pachnik said a boat on Saturday reversed and collided with a floating raft that had six to eight people on it. Those people were sucked under the boat, he said.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said the operator of the boat had been attempting to drop anchor when the craft instead traveled in reverse.
Of the two women who were seriously injured in the crash, Patchnik said one woman had her feet severed. The other woman had a cut on her hand that needed immediate treatment, Officer Raul Echevarria said.
“Right away, I wanted to just apply direct pressure on her injury on her hand,” he said.
No other injuries were reported.
The “Playpen” where the accident occurred is a party area where pleasure boats converge near Navy Pier.
A GoFundMe page has been organized for one of the victims, Lana Batochir.
