Well, here’s a switch.
Instead of the usual scary summer story of a person being saved from a shark attack, we’ve got a nice story of a man saving the shark.
And not only a shark, a great white shark at that!
As FOX News reported, the whole scene was captured by beachgoer Kelly Bailey, and it’s a remarkable clip.
Early on, we see little bits of the shark pop out of the waves, and it’s just a few feet from a completely calm woman standing with her baby in hand, seemingly oblivious to the beast.
Then an unidentified man starts calling for help, noticing it’s a shark and it’s in peril.
Bailey explains that at first no one took in the severity of the situation because you couldn’t really tell what kind or how big the fish was.
"I was walking over towards the Jetty where my son and his cousins were exploring and I noticed a fishing line pulling from far out in the water," Bailey said. "I then saw a man reeling in a large marine reel and another man running towards the water with a spear. After the man was fighting to reel in what we all thought was a sport fish, was told by the other man holding the spear that it was in fact a shark."
A few screams are heard as the unidentified man goes in to help the shark who has been wrangled up in the fishing line.
He gets a hold of the line and slowly pulls the fish in a bit, but as it’s obviously much stronger and struggling, the man decides to walk right up and starts to untie the great white that looks to be about five-feet long.
He grabs it by the tail, and with some help from the tide, gets the shark stuck on land long enough to get it untangled, despite the shark’s constant flailing and flopping.
Some onlookers can be seen in frame, but at first the man works alone to help the shark.
Waves continually knock the man and the shark over. Another man finally comes over with cutters, clips the line, then gives it to the man who actually tries to get into the mouth of the shark, now a bit more docile either from being out of the water a bit, or realizing the man is helping.
Somehow the heroic human cuts the remaining line then drags the shark back into the waves, deep enough for the shark to get his fins going again and swim out to sea.
It is an amazing scene of bravery and beauty. And boy, we’re not even in shark season yet.
Though a spokesperson for the California State Parks confirmed that this kind of incident, while scary, would not cause a park closure or further warnings.
"For this scenario, we would not post signs or close the beach for two reasons, the spokesperson told Fox 5 San Diego. "The first is that a White Shark this small primarily feeds on fish and stingrays. Secondly, this was a non-active interaction, the shark was not seen in the aquatic recreation zone prior to or after its release. The only reason it was seen in the aquatic recreation zone was because it was manually brought to shore by the fisherman."
Maybe so, but I’m guessing that oblivious mom took her kid back up to the beach house after this.
