Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - For the second time this week, the SPCA Serving Erie County called in Amherst Police to rescue a ball python along Niagara Falls Boulevard. The snake was found at a car wash location along the boulevard.

Gina Lattuca with the SPCA tells WBEN the snake was found at the Delta Sonic on Niagara Falls Boulevard near East Robinson. "We again received a call from Amherst Police. From the scene they called our officers and our officers went out and rescued the snake," says Lattuca, who says the snake was found in a PVC pipe Friday morning.

Lattuca says there's speculation on all sides about the snake. "Some are speculating that these animals may have been intentionally abandoned. Some are speculating that the animals that may have come from one location and broken down into some kind of a barrier and barricade of course, these animals are strong enough to do that," says Lattuca. She emphasizes there's no way to know for certain. However Lattuca notes neither animal is in horrible condition leading her to believe there is an owner and the snakes were in the possession of the owner or owners not long ago.

The other snake was also found at the Delta Sonic on Niagara Falls Boulevard near East Robinson Road.

Lattuca says if the snakes are not claimed after the stray time period, they probably will not be available for general adoption because of the care. "There's a very delicate care for animals like this, these aren't animals that typically first time snake owners will bring into their homes," says Lattuca. She says these would probably be placement situations with people who are knowledgeable about ball pythons. "The special needs to special aquarium sizes and enclosure sizes, specialized diets, these are very special snakes, these are snakes that could be quite valuable," explains Lattuca.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SPCA at (716) 875-7360, ext. 214. The SPCA will respond to anonymous tips.
