Buffalo Police responds to hostage situation Monday night

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Police Crisis Management Team and SWAT team were both activated for a hostage situation Monday night.

Shortly before 9 p.m., A District officers responded to a Crisis Services Assist call in the 100 block of Scoville Avenue. During an evaluation of a 35-year-old Buffalo male, the male took a relative into a bedroom and refused to let the relative leave, while wielding a makeshift weapon.


Shortly after 11 p.m., SWAT members were able to free the hostage and apprehend the 35-year-old male.

He was transported via AMR to Erie County Medical Center, where he was admitted under the New York State Mental Hygiene Act.

Detectives are taking statements from witnesses and determining the appropriate next steps in this case.
