Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Heavy lake effect snow, especially in the Southtowns, has led to various travel advisories and road closures.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued a State of Emergency for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Allegany counties.

In a press release, Gov. Hochul said an emergency was declared to "ensure state resources are available to assist local communities as we work together to keep New Yorkers safe throughout the duration of the storm."

City of Buffalo Mayor Christ Scanlon has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Buffalo, effective at 1 p.m. Tuesday in response to the ongoing lake effect snow storm.

Mayor Scanlon is urging all residents to stay indoors if possible and adhere to all emergency directives. The city will continue to provide updates as the storm progresses and residents are encouraged to stay informed through Mayor Scanlon's social media pages.

Route 219 has been reopened between the New York State Thruway and Peters Road in the Town of Ashford.

The Buffalo Skyway is closed, including the portion of Route 5 from Downtown Buffalo to Route 179 in Woodlawn.

Services like trash collection will be disrupted Tuesday. Waste Management says they will not be collecting trash in Alden, Aurora, Boston, Clarence, Colden, Concord, Eden, Holland, Lancaster, Orchard Park, Springville and in Wyoming County.

There will also be no garbage and recycling pickup in the City of Buffalo on Tuesday, according to a text sent by the city Monday evening.
