Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Expansion of the Metro Rail into Tonawanda and Amherst may have just taken a step forward.

The Federal Transit Administration has completed a review of the NFTA's Metro Rail Expansion Project, ending the federal environmental review process.

“Completing the final environmental impact statement marks a pivotal moment in bringing the Project vision closer to reality” NFTA Executive Director Kim Minkel said in a statement. "It’s an exciting step forward that will support economic growth and improve transportation for generations to come.”

The Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision were the last steps of the federal environmental review process. The NFTA says the project will now continue through the remaining federal and local approval processes with construction, phasing, and funding strategies "further refined as it advances toward implementation."

Previously, the NFTA said their goal is to have the project complete by 2032, but there is no firm timetable for when the next steps will take place.
