Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has sent a letter to the Postmaster General concerning the United States Postal Services' proposal to relocate mail processing from the William Street facility in Buffalo to Rochester.
In the letter, Mayor Brown cited concerns that the delivery of mail to customers will be delayed if processing moves out of the city. He says next day mail service is essential to local businesses and Buffalo would be at a competitive disadvantage without it.
The Mayor added that whatever short-term savings produced by moving processing out of the city would be offset by a long-term economic disaster.
The letter was sent after members of the American Postal Workers Union held an informational picket outside the facility, which included support from UAW members as well as Buffalo Common Council member Mitch Nowakowski.
The William Street Postal Service facility handles the largest amount of mail in Upstate New York.
The Postal Service has set up a public meeting for Tuesday night at 6 at Creekside Banquet Facility in Cheektowaga.
Officials for the Postal Service will be addressing the proposed move for the first time at that meeting.
