Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo police are investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred at approximately 10 a.m. EST Saturday in the 100 block of Reed Street in the city.

Police report one individual is deceased.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told reporters Saturday afternoon the initial call was for a man in the street with a gun. When officers arrived on scene, they encountered the individual, armed with a shotgun, and issued numerous commands to put the weapon down.

The male suspect shot the weapon and two officers returned fire, with the man being struck multiple times, according to Gramaglia. Officers immediately began to render aid until emergency medical staff arrived on scene and the individual was pronounced dead.

Police officials identified the deceased suspect as 58-year-old Edward Holmes of Buffalo on Sunday.

"It's very unfortunate that it ended this way," Gramaglia said on Saturday. "It's very early in the investigation."

Gramaglia noted the initial call that contacted 9-1-1 came from the phone of the deceased individual.

As is required, the New York State Attorney General's Office is assisting in the investigation.

"What we have, they have," Gramaglia stated.

The two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.
