Poll: 59% say Cuomo should resign

Marist poll finds only 11% of voters believe Cuomo deserves re-election

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A new Marist Poll finds a majority of voters surveyed say Governor Cuomo needs to resign, and if he doesn't, impeachment proceedings need to begin.

The poll finds 59% of New Yorkers, including 52% of registered Democrats, say New York Governor Andrew Cuomo should resign from office in light of the results of an independent investigation which found Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, including state employees. 32% report Cuomo should serve out the rest of his term. If Cuomo does not resign, 59% of New Yorkers say the New York State Legislature should impeach him.

The poll also finds Cuomo losing support in any possible re-election bid, says Marist's Lee Miringoff. "11% of New Yorkers, including 12% of registered voters, think Cuomo deserves to be reelected while 78% say it’s time for someone else to be governor," says Miringoff. Back in February, 36% of registered voters statewide thought Cuomo should be reelected, and 58% reported it was time for a new governor.

Miringoff finds an interesting comparison between Cuomo and former President Donald Trump. "If you think about the problems President Trump has had with accusations of sexual impropriety, the Republicans stayed in line and did not desert him. Democrats are reacting much differently to Governor Cuomo." notes Miringoff. "Democrats in New York are telling us they've seen enough, they've heard enough, and it's time to wrap it up."

Miringoff says it's up to Cuomo whether he will resign or seek re-election, but "The court of public opinion believes the allegations against Governor Cuomo warrant his removal from office. If he does not resign, nearly six in ten New Yorkers believe he should be impeached. Even if he survives this scandal, his reelection prospects are rock bottom with even his Democratic base deserting him.”
