Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - About a month after 1,550 people lost their jobs as a result of the sudden closure of the Sumitomo Rubber plant in the Town of Tonawanda, the New York State Labor Department will help them by hosting a job fair this week.
The job fair takes place Tuesday from 10 a.m.-to-2 p.m. EST at the Lincoln Park Athletic Center in the Town of Tonawanda.
"We have over 100 employers who are going to be at this job fair in-person, and this is a fabulous opportunity for these workers who can come in and sit down and talk to a potential employer face-to-face. There's no better way to get a job than that way," said State Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon with WBEN.
Reardon advises Sumitomo employees to bring a resume, but if it's not updated, there will be help available on site.
"We have a resume writing workshop, and tips so you can figure out with the help of the online facility, or if you want to contact the Career Center and come in in person, that's also fine," Reardon noted.
There will also be a professional headshot service available for these workers.
"We can take your head shot there, and you'll be able to sit down with an employer and have that really important face to face conversation," Reardon added.
More than 100 employers, many in manufacturing, will be present at Tuesday's job fair.
"I should say this is a manufacturing community that's reaching out. Most of them, if not all of them, are in the Buffalo region. So it's not find a job and move, it's find a job and go to work," Reardon said.
She also congratulates the community for the outpouring of support since the plant closed back on Nov. 7.
