BTF Survey: Teachers feel 'uninvolved' in McKinley reopening plan

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - If you ask the teachers at McKinley High School in Buffalo how they feel about their involvement in a reopening plans for the school following a violent stabbing and shooting incident earlier this year, a majority would say they were not 'meaningfully' involved.

The Buffalo Teachers Federation initiated a survey of the teaching team at McKinley, asking about their involvement and additionally compiling specific comments about the reopening process from the teachers.

A total of 46 teachers completed the survey and about 89 percent indicate they felt uninvolved in the reopening plan for the school while about 10 percent felt involved.

There were 32 comments forwarded from teachers in the survey responding with specific concerns about steps being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff at the school.

"Only half the students have returned," wrote one teacher and questioning the ability to reasonably assess the reopening at this stage of the process.

"Students were introduced to a new principal who mysteriously took a planned vacation the following week," wrote one teacher who added that students need stability.

Concerns over safety equipment not yet installed also were mentioned in some of the comments, referencing cameras, radios and metal detectors.

Following the violence outside McKinley High School, the Buffalo Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Kriner Cash and named Tonja Williams interim superintendent.
