Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A long awaited spray park is about to open up in the Town of Tonawanda. The spray park is 5,500 square feet with some 40 features.

Town of Tonawanda Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mark Campanella notes circumstances beyond their control led to the park's anticipated opening last year to be delayed. "In construction, there are delays that are unforeseen. Today's day and age, you still have contractors that are faced with employee shortages and things of that nature, weather and it basically that's what we were faced with. You can't rush something like this," says Campanella.

Campanella says the park covers 5,500 square feet. "Some 40 spray features highlighted with slides and other real nice attributes that the venue brings forward to us, and capped off by a 55 gallon water drum that dumps upon filling so that dumps every maybe 20 to 25 seconds," explains Campanella. He says the park will require reservations for two hour sessions. "The venue, is capped off at approximately 200, that's why there is a reservation system," says Campanella. "There are stringent guidelines that we have to follow per the New York State Department of Health. So after every session, after every two hour session, and people are wondering why you can't park there for the whole day. This is because of the stringent cleaning that's involved, and having to hose and wash off the floor of the pad, and make sure that thing you have to do a whole check of the filtration system, make sure that everything is up to snuff and the water is being filtered...it's quite a process."

Campanella says testing has gone well. "We got there yesterday, and lo and behold, before an interview took place, it went on, and there was the sun was out. It looks like the splash park gods were shining down on us," says Campanella. He says it's designed for children of all ages, as well as ADA, and it's also universally accessible.

The spray park opens May 22.
