The two cars were on the Garden State Parkway near a Cranford Township exit around 4:45 a.m., when an Acura hit the back of a Mazda, authorities said.
After the Mazda was hit, it ran off the roadway and struck a tree as the Acura caught on fire, according to officials.
The 27-year-old driver of the Mazda, a Pennsylvania resident, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Acura was not injured.
Authorities are still investigating the incident and more details were not immediately available.
