LI boat explosion leaves 5 hospitalized

BABYLON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Five people were hospitalized after a boat exploded in the water off Babylon Village on Friday, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The boat was carrying six people when it caught fire and exploded just before 5 p.m. while cruising in a canal near Sumpwams Avenue, officials said.

One of the men was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. Four others had minor injuries and were taken to other local hospitals.

Police are carrying out an investigation into the explosion, and it’s not yet clear what caused it.
