Jack Mikulincer was on his way to a Sabbath service in Manhattan Beach on Saturday afternoon when he was hit by 52-year-old Pytor Yadgarov in a 2020 BMW X5.

Mikulincer was found lying in the street with trauma to his body beside his electric wheelchair at the intersection of Coleridge Street and Oriental Boulevard.

Yadgarov, a prominent real estate developer, remained on the scene but has not been charged. Police are unsure of how fast Yadgarov was driving when he hit Mikulincer.

The real estate developer lives in the neighborhood where the incident happened, just four blocks from the victim's home, on Ocean Avenue.

The intersection that Mikulincer was crossing when he was struck does not have a stoplight or crosswalk.

“Jack Mikulincer survived concentration camps during the Holocaust. On Saturday, he could not survive simply trying to cross the street to get to his synagogue," said John Berman, Families for Safe Streets Member.

Mikulincer was a Hungarian native who survived Holocaust-era concentration camps.

As of Sunday, at least 24 people were killed in crashes on New York City streets this year, an increase from 16 deaths during the same period in 2020.
