Israel Elves allegedly killed his 42-year-old girlfriend, Hope Staton Pearson, on Monday in East Flatbush because she threatened to have him arrested for violating her order of protection against him, the Daily News reported.
Elves, who lived down the street from Pearson, has criminal history and was recently paroled from prison in March after serving nearly five years for robbery. Pearson had previously filed several domestic violence complaints against him, including one after he was released from prison accusing him of choking her.
Last month, Pearson filed a complaint against Elves alleging he pulled a knife on her in their shared apartment because she wouldn’t share her drugs, according to a criminal complaint. Days later, Elves was arrested, charged with misdemeanors and released without bail.
Pearson was fatally shot six times on Monday and the whole ordeal was caught on video, according to the criminal complaint. Elves is being held without bail and charged with first-degree murder. He now faces life in prison.
Sharron Staton, 82, Pearson’s aunt, told the Daily News that her niece was a decent person at heart, despite being troubled.
“She wasn’t mean, she wasn’t vicious — she was a struggling woman trying to make a life,” the aunt said. “It boggles the mind.”
