CORAM, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The mother of Tyler Phillips is heartbroken by her son's death on Thursday, the day after he was hit by an SUV in Coram that failed to stop.

"He's my hero," she said. "He's my hero."

Tyler, who just turned 13 on Tuesday, and his sister Krystal Randolph, also 13, were walking home from a park along the bike lane on Granny Road when they were struck from behind by a hit-and-run driver at about 7:25 p.m.

Krystal said her brother pushed her out of the way, saving her life. She suffered only minor injuries.

"How do you not know you hit two kids?" Tyler's aunt asked. "That's inevitable. You hit two kids. How do you not realize that, and you're just going to keep going?"

Suffolk County Police said they are continuing to search for the driver.

Tyler is being kept alive as his organs are being donated.

He attended William Paca Middle School, where grief counselors are being made available.

The two are eighth-graders at the school, according to a tweet posted by the William Floyd School District on Thursday morning.

"While we are happy that Krystal is likely to live, we are heartbroken to learn of Tyler's passing," the tweet said, adding that Krystal and Tyler have another sibling who goes to Tangier Smith Elementary School.
