NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Starting next week, the city Department of Education will open hundreds of community meal sites for all New Yorkers and students in the city’s free summer school program, Summer Rising.

Four hundred community meal sites will open across the five boroughs on Tuesday, July 6. They will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Some of the grab-and-go meals include oven-roasted chicken, Jamaican beef patties, burritos, pizza and breakfast foods, with kosher and halal options available at some locations.

The DOE started offering free meals last year. The number of food insecure New Yorkers rose from 15% to 25% during the pandemic, according to Hunter College.

A map of the sites can be found at schools.nyc.gov. People can also text “NYC FOOD” or “NYC COMIDA” to 877-877.
