NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Georgia man who was charged with raping a 27-year-old woman in a Queens alleyway in 2020 pleaded guilty on Thursday, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Friday.

Rony Lopez Alvarez, 39, held a sharp object to the victim’s throat on Jan. 18, 2020 around 4 a.m. and dragged her in an alleyway, where he raped her and threatened he’d “snap her neck” if she called for help.
The victim went to a nearby hospital after the attack, where doctors administered a rape kit and collected DNA evidence that was used to convict Lopez Alvarez
Police arrested him about a year-and-a-half later in Georgia and extradited him to New York.
“For more than a year, we continued our investigation in search of the man responsible for this horrible crime,” said Katz. “The defendant, who fled the state and was extradited to face charges, has now admitted to brutally violating a woman as she walked along the sidewalk. Although the trauma cannot be undone, I hope that the victim takes some solace and rests easier knowing her attacker will be incarcerated for his criminal actions.”
Katz said Queens Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant plans to sentence Lopez Alvarez to 10 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He will also have to register as a sex offender.
