NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Rep. Lee Zeldin announced Thursday morning that he’s running for New York governor in 2022.
Zeldin, a Long Island Republican and frequent critic of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced his campaign on "Fox & Friends."
“After talking to New Yorkers who feel like this is a last stand, the last great opportunity to save New York. And the fact that to save our state, Andrew Cuomo’s got to go, I am announcing here this morning that I am running for governor of New York in 2022,” Zeldin said.
The four-term congressman followed up the appearance with a tweet that included the hashtag #CuomosGottaGo.
“I'll bring the kind of relentless, fighting spirit towards helping to save our state that Cuomo reserves for multi-million-dollar self-congratulatory book deals, cover-ups, abuse & self-dealing,” Zeldin tweeted.
WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported Zeldin almost got out of breath as he listed the reasons of why he chose to run for governor.
He says he has spoken to residents across every county in the state.
"There's a lot that needs to change here in our state and people are fleeing because of the high taxes, the loss of job opportunities, the cost of living," Zeldin said. "People are fleeing because of rising crime and cashless bail, defund the police movement. They say you're not supporting law enforcement enough. People are upset that kids are not fully back at school. Their favorite restaurant is not yet fully open."
Hall asked Zeldin whether he believes he's at a disadvantage because historically the governor of the state is a Democrat.
"This is a campaign to fight for everyone who is passionate about returning New York to his former glory," Zeldin said. "I believe that we have a great chance of winning this race for multiple reasons. One is this the first time in my life that we have this one party Democratic rule going into a governor's race at all levels — New York City, Albany and D.C."
Zeldin, 41, made the announcement a day after Rudy Giuliani’s 35-year-old son, Andrew Giuliani, said he planned to run for governor of the state. Andrew Giuliani is an ally of former President Donald Trump.
