NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 19-year-old Brooklyn man is facing multiple charges in the unprovoked hate crime attack on a 70-year-old Sikh man earlier this month, police said.

Vernon Douglas was arrested and charged on Thursday with hate crime assault, robbery and aggravated harassment.
On April 3, around 6:45 a.m., the victim, Nirmal Singh, was punched in the face while walking to temple in the Richmond Hills neighborhood at 95th Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.
Police said Douglas allegedly approached Singh, who was wearing traditional Sikh articles of faith, and punched him in the face in an unprovoked assault. Douglas then fled the scene on foot.
Singh was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.
Singh had only been in Queens for two weeks when he was attacked, according to United Sikhs, a non-profit organization that tweeted about the incident.
On Thursday, the organization shared news of the arrest on Twitter and said they will "continue to monitor the case."
