The 49-year-old was knifed at W. 44th Street and Eighth Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. NYPD officers responding to a 911 call found him stabbed in the neck and groin.

EMS transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead. He was later identified as Guarionex Torres, of the Bronx.

The victim had a history of arrests and was known for menacing people in Hell's Kitchen, sources said. He was busted just last week for swinging a hatchet at people.

A 28-year-old man was stopped about a block away from the scene and taken into custody.

The suspect, identified as Jesus Ramirez, of the Bronx, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

He told police that he and Torres got into a fight and that he stabbed him in self-defense, sources said.

The fight may have started when the two men bumped into each other, according to the sources.

A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

An investigation into the slaying is ongoing. No other injuries were reported.
