NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New York is offering new resources for state employees who believe they contracted COVID-19 due to exposure at work, including those suffering from long-term symptoms.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced the state is offering a series of webinars to educate workers on their rights when it comes to filing workers’ compensation claims after being exposed to COVID.
The webinars will also educate workers on the cash and/or medical benefits they may be eligible to receive, especially if they are suffering from long term health issues from the virus.
“It has been nearly two years after the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in our state, and many hardworking New Yorkers are still experiencing long-haul COVID-19 symptoms that are adversely impacting their health, wellbeing, and ability to support themselves and their families,” said Hochul.
“Those still suffering from the lasting effects of this horrible virus deserve to understand their rights and to have access to assistance with filing workers’ compensation claims,” she added.
Hochul’s office noted that the two-year deadline is approaching for those who became sick with COVID-19 as a result of work exposure in the early months of 2020.
“Filing a claim is important because workers’ compensation benefits in an established claim include lifetime medical care for the treatment of the work-related injury or illness,” the governor’s office said in a release.
Workers who did not become seriously ill with COVID-19 can also file a claim to “protect their future rights to these medical benefits, should they ever need them.”
There is no risk or harm in filing a claim, even if the claim is denied.
The free webinars will be held on Feb. 23, March 9 and April 13 between noon and 1 p.m. Participants do not need to register in advance, and can join the sessions at wcb.ny.gov/covid-19.
