NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — While some people think of New York as the place to be for the holiday season, a report by FinanceBuzz rated the Big Apple as the “grinchiest” city in the country.
The FinanceBuzz team analyzed 50 of the nation’s biggest cities against nearly two dozen metrics to “help measure the spirit of the season.”
New York City earned its grinch title by having the country’s lowest rates of holiday decoration shops (0.6), Christmas tree lots (0.3), gift shops (9.9) and food banks (0.1) per 100,000 people.
The report also found that only 23.3% of New Yorkers volunteer annually, coming in as the fourth-lowest percentage in the country.
Coming in close behind New York are Los Angeles, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois, respectively.
On the other end of the spectrum, some of the cities with the most holiday spirit are only a short drive away from New York.
Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island, both rank high in having the most holiday cheer.
In Hartford, there are over 1,926 holiday festivals and events per 100,000 people which is the most of any city in the country. Providence has the second-highest number of holiday festivals and events per capita with 981.
