Queens woman who started running to cope with grandfather's death sets sights on NYC Marathon

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Sunday marks the 50th running of the TCS New York City Marathon, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

Lauren Nazarieh, 25, of Kew Gardens, Queens, started running during the start of the pandemic after losing her grandfather to the coronavirus.

"I needed something and I said to myself it's either I crumble to this and I maybe go into not a good place or I can rise above it and find something," Nazarieh said. "It really became my self-help tool, as well as something that made me mentally stronger and made me resilient."

She began walking and running, which eventually led to all running, and the 18- and 20-mile runs needed to prepare for the marathon distance.

"I think what really inspired me was just a lot of change. Change inspired me and loss, and now I feel it's completely turned around which is amazing," Nazarieh said.

After running through empty streets during the pandemic, Nazarieh said she can't wait to hear the cheering crowds from the sidewalks.

"So I'm really happy, really excited for the expo, the race, the start village, it's really exciting," Nazarieh said.
