NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Just two months after announcing the end of its Broadway run, “The Phantom of the Opera” will stay on stage a little longer, producer Cameron Mackintosh said Tuesday.

Mackintosh initially said the show would close on February 18 after 35 years on Broadway but a spike in sales led to the announcement of an eight-week extension to April 16.

“The response to the news that The Phantom of the Opera is finally going to end its record-breaking original Broadway run after 35 years has been as phenomenal as the show itself,” Mackintosh said in a statement to Deadline. “We are all thrilled that not only the show’s wonderful fans have been snapping up the remaining tickets, but also that a new, younger audience is equally eager to see this legendary production before it disappears. Such is the demand for tickets that we are delighted to announce that The Shubert Organization has been able to arrange a final eight-week extension of the run at The Majestic Theatre.”

Phantom of the Opera's closing announcement came as the show struggled to maintain good box office sales because of the pandemic paired with rising costs. After the initial September announcement, the show saw a boom in ticket sales prompting the extension.

During Thanksgiving week, the show saw its highest-grossing week ever, bringing in $2.2 million, according to the New York Times.

“For most of last year, we were losing every week,” Mackintosh recently told the Times. “There comes a point when you become theatrical wallpaper. People took it for granted that it’s going to run forever.”

Mackintosh said there will be no more extensions of The Phantom of the Opera with April 14’s show closing out with a benefit performance and a final performance before an audience which will include alumni and friends of Phantom. After that, The Majestic Theatre, where the show runs, will be closed for renovations.

Tickets for Phantom of the Opera’s last 10 weeks will go on sale Wednesday.
