The apprehended people were just a few of the thousands of demonstrators who turned up to rally against the SCOTUS decision in Lower Manhattan.

Of the 24 apprehended, 21 were given desk appearance tickets, and three were arrested and charged with obstruction of governmental administration.

Crowds started to gather at Washington Square Park around 4 p.m. and grew to thousands by the official rally start time at 6:30 p.m.

A similar number of protesters gathered at Union Square throughout the day to protest the end of almost 50 years of precedent for abortion rights in the U.S.

The two protests merged as each group marched up Fifth Avenue.

Some protesters staged a brief sit in at Fifth Avenue and E Eighth Street, blocking traffic in solidarity with those who lost access to safe and legal abortions.

The combined crowd reached Grand Central Station around 9 p.m.

New York politicians were also present at the protests, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

The protesters in New York City join other outraged citizens across the country demonstrating in favor of abortion rights.

Activists have ramped up abortion rights actions since the draft of Friday’s decision was leaked to Politico on May 3.
