Members and officers of the TWU Local 100 joined the family of Anthony Nelson, the victim of the brutal beating, at the Bronx Courthouse where 49-year-old suspect Alexander Wright was scheduled to appear.

Nelson, a subway cleaner, is recovering from two surgeries after being left with a broken nose and injured collarbone from the assault. Nelson was helping a customer who said Wright was harassing people when Wright allegedly attacked him.

Wright’s scheduled court appearance Tuesday was administratively adjourned to Friday. The suspected attacker had more than 40 arrests prior to the incident.

Rally goers called on the court to give Wright the maximum penalty for the assault.

Nelson’s sister told 1010 WINS that since the attack, he has been crying a lot.

“I think he cries more because he's stuck in a bed and he's not able to actually get up and help other people or go to work,” she said.

Union Vice President Robert Kelley also said policies have to change with thousands of attacks occurring each year, some going unreported, his members don’t feel safe.

“We are tired of [emotionally disturbed persons] getting amnesty,” Kelley said. “They're out here running amok. This guy has over 40 cases of assault and it's just ridiculous.”
