Unlicensed driver arrested after woman fatally struck by SUV in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (WCS 880) -- The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating a fatal collision in Brooklyn early Sunday, according to authorities.

Police responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at St. Johns Place and Rochester Avenue in Crown Heights just after 2 a.m., officials said.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 46-year-old woman attempted to enter the rear passenger seat of a 2019 Jeep Cherokee in front of 1530 St. Johns Place when Oddly Michel, the 48-year-old driver of the vehicle began to drive away traveling eastbound on St. Johns Place.

As a result, the woman was knocked to the ground and was struck by an unknown black SUV traveling eastbound on St. Johns Place, officials said.

EMS transported the woman to NYC Health + Hosptials/ Kings County, where she was pronounced dead.

The black SUV did not remain at the scene.

Michel remained at the scene and was taken into police custody. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operator and license restriction violation.

The investigation is ongoing.
