Community members in Buffalo are pressing forward following Tuesday's shooting at the Allina Clinic that left one person dead and four others injured.
Buffalo Mayor Teri Lachermeier told WCCO Radio's Dave Lee on Thursday morning that their focus is on the Allina Clinic, their employees, and employees' families.
Part of that focus comes through a new website called with the motto: Buffalo Strong.
"We want to make sure we're touching the people who need it during this traumatic time," Lachermeier said. "We want to connect, care, and continue. We know that we can't just let this go. We need to work on all the people that have been effected and will be effected through time."
Part of that focus is on the children in the community who went through lockdown on Tuesday as the shooting and aftermath unfolded.
"We want to make sure we're reaching out to those young kids who went through a lockdown that was not a drill," Lachermeier said. "We want to make sure we're getting the message out that we're safe and there is good leadership around them to make sure for the time being, we're going to focus on the needs of people who are traumatized by it."
Buffalo Strong is a website created by a community member and includes several ways to assist with the community's recovery.
Lachermeier said the outpouring of support has not stopped since Tuesday.
"I have received probably over 500 emails, texts, and phone calls from communities, even the Governor Tim Walz called to ask how he could help," Lachermeier said. "I asked if he would give us permission to put our flag at half-staff. He called later Wednesday night and said, 'You got it!"
Governor Walz on Wednesday directed all flags at state and federal buildings in Minnesota to be flown at half-staff, effective immediately, until sunset on Sunday, February 14.
A link on the website goes to the GoFundMe site for Lindsay Overbay, the 37-year-old mother of two who was killed in Tuesday's rampage.
"I know her coworkers' hearts are breaking because they lost an amazing person," Lachermeier said. "I feel like there are so many people who are wanting or wanted to be there for her and that opportunity was taken away immediately because of what happened to her. It's a very sad situation. I hope people rally around that GoFundMe."
The GoFundMe "Lindsey Strong!" had raised over $184,000 as of Thursday morning.
Allina Health has also set-up a pair of sites to assist the Allina Health Buffalo Crossroads Clinic team. One site for monetary gifts goes towards the Buffalo Hospital Foundation's Mental Health and Addiction Services Fund for mental health support, education, and prevention in Wright County.
Another site is dedicated to providing welcome-back meals for workers when the clinic reopens.
A GoFundMe dedicated to assisting Sherry Curtis, another victim in Tuesday's shooting, has also been established.
