Firefighter dies believing COVID-19 was a ‘political game’

A Nevada mother is pleading with people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 after her husband — who believed the virus was a political creation — died over the weekend.

“[We] thought it was a political game, and I didn’t think it could happen to us,” Christina Lowe told KVVU, saying her husband Mike refused to wear a mask or get vaccinated because of his distrust of the government.

Mike Lowe died over the weekend after developing pneumonia and needing kidney dialysis. The 15-year firefighting veteran left behind his wife and two young children.

“It’s horrible thinking of my children having to grow up without their father now,” Lowe said. “He’s not going to be there for birthdays and holidays. He’s not going to be there when they graduate, get married, [or] have kids. He’s going to miss out on all of that.”

Because of her heartbreaking loss, Christina’s views on COVID-19 have evolved quickly. She is now fully vaccinated herself.

“That pain in my arm was not anything compared to the pain that I felt losing my husband,” she recalled.

“My husband believing it was political is why he didn’t want to wear a mask. That is why is he didn’t want to get vaccinated. He didn’t trust them,” Christina admitted. “But it cost him his life.”

Christina believes the community can best honor her husband’s life by wearing a mask in public spaces and getting the vaccine.
